Map the affected spaces
Discuss lawns, planting beds, driveways, patios, gutters, and neighboring surfaces before work starts. Ask how removed slate and metal will be collected and where containers will be placed. Identify any pieces the owner wants retained for matching or historical records. Salvage should be separated deliberately rather than retrieved later from mixed debris.

Define the handover check
Agree on a final walk-through of accessible areas and a process for reporting missed debris. Ask the contractor to account for the actual fastener materials used; a magnetic sweep alone cannot collect every type of roofing metal. Confirm that temporary protection and unused materials will be removed or stored as agreed. Keep retained stock labeled and separate from waste.
