How to prepare for a slate contractor's first visit

A short preparation package helps a contractor spend the visit investigating the roof rather than reconstructing its history.

01

Gather the essentials

Provide the address, your main concern, available roof photographs, and records of earlier work. Note when leaks occur and which rooms are affected. Explain access restrictions, pets, occupied spaces, and any areas that cannot be entered. If you have spare slate or old product labels, tell the contractor where they are; do not move heavy stored material unnecessarily.

02

Agree on the purpose of the visit

Clarify whether the appointment is for an initial estimate, a detailed condition survey, or a specific repair diagnosis. Ask what written information you will receive afterward. Have one person collect questions from other decision makers so the contractor receives a consistent brief. End the visit by identifying the next action and any information still needed before a meaningful proposal can be prepared.
