What to tell a gutter cleaner about your slate roof

A gutter appointment should include the roof material and any known access limitations, especially where the eaves are difficult to reach.

01

Explain the roof before scheduling

Tell the service provider that the roof is slate and describe nearby porches, conservatories, landscaping, or overhead obstructions. Ask how the gutters will be reached without damaging the roof. Share any known loose pieces or deteriorated gutter sections so those conditions can be assessed before someone places equipment nearby.

02

Ask for useful observations

Request photographs of blockages, damaged gutters, or other concerns encountered during the work. Gutter cleaning is not automatically a slate condition survey, so keep the scope clear. If a roof defect is reported, have a qualified slater review it. Save the service date and photographs with the maintenance file, particularly when investigating overflow or moisture near the eaves.
