01
Start with recognizable areas
Use an existing drawing or a clearly labeled sketch of the building outline. Name roof zones consistently, such as front main slope, rear wing, or east porch. Mark ridges, valleys, chimneys, and other obvious features. The plan does not need to pretend to be a measured construction drawing; label it as a location reference if it is approximate.
02
Connect records to the plan
Put the roof-zone label on inspection photographs, invoices, and repair notes. Record a date and a brief description of the work. When a future contractor asks where an earlier leak occurred, the answer can point to the same zone instead of relying on left or right from an unknown viewpoint. Update the plan when additions or alterations change the roof.
