Planning church and institutional slate roof projects

Churches, schools and civic buildings often have large, steep and highly visible slate roofs. Good planning protects the building while helping decision-makers understand priorities and funding.

01

Turn condition into a phased plan

Survey each elevation and roof area, then separate emergency water entry, near-term repairs, metal renewal and long-term work. Clear photographs and quantities help boards compare proposals and communicate why a project is needed.

02

Budget for access and protection

Scaffolding, lifts, pedestrian protection, interior protection and occupied-building schedules can be major project components. They should be identified early rather than treated as surprises after a low roofing number is accepted.

03

Preserve stewardship options

Sound slate may support repair, phased flashing work or selective salvage. Replacement plans should document material choices, attic stock and future maintenance. Qualified contractors should explain how services, events and public access will be protected.
