Confirm that the exposed material is real slate
Some products use thin natural slate; others imitate slate with polymers or composites. Ask for a clear description of every component, how pieces are supported and attached, and which parts remain visible and exposed to weather.

Evaluate the complete tested system
Weight is only one criterion. Review applicable wind, fire, water-shedding and material documentation, along with slope limits, underlayment, flashing integration and approved installation instructions.

Plan repair and future supply
Understand how an individual damaged unit is removed and replaced, whether hidden carriers or interlayers remain available, and how future matching slate will be sourced. A serviceable system should not require dismantling a large roof area for one isolated repair.
