Documenting damaged packaging on a slate delivery

A careful delivery record helps the owner, supplier, and carrier understand what was visible when the material arrived.

01

Photograph before moving the load

Where it is safe, capture the whole shipment, identifying labels, and any visibly disturbed or damaged packaging. Keep close-up photographs connected to a wide view so their location is clear. Follow the supplier's and carrier's instructions for reporting concerns. Do not enter an unstable load or dismantle damaged packaging without an appropriate handling plan.

02

Separate packaging and material findings

Packaging damage does not establish the condition of every piece, and apparently intact packaging does not confirm that all material is suitable. Arrange inspection with the supplier and installing contractor as needed. Keep counts and observations factual rather than estimating unseen losses. Retain the records with the order so replacement arrangements and accepted quantities can be tracked consistently.
