Read from structure to exterior
Locate the supporting construction first, then identify the deck, underlayment or system layers, slate, and nearby flashing. Follow the labels rather than relying on color or line thickness. Ask which dimensions are fixed requirements and which are illustrative. A diagram may explain a concept without being a complete project detail.

Connect the section to a location
Match the drawing to a roof plan or marked photograph. An eave section does not answer a valley question, and a typical detail may need adaptation at a corner. Keep a list of unresolved conditions for the designer and installer. Reading the drawing this way helps owners ask useful questions without treating a simplified illustration as installation authorization.
