Built-in gutters and natural slate roofs

Built-in gutters can serve for decades when sized, lined and drained correctly. When they fail, water can enter walls and framing before exterior symptoms become obvious.

01

Inspect the complete trough

Evaluate liner seams, slopes, outlets, end conditions, expansion, substrate and overflow risk. A small visible split may be one symptom of an undersized or restrained metal system.

02

Coordinate the slate edge

The lower slate courses must discharge into the gutter while allowing access for liner renewal. Plan removable courses or accepted repair details instead of burying critical seams beneath inaccessible stone.

03

Provide emergency drainage

Clogged outlets or extreme rainfall can raise water above normal levels. Overflow provisions should direct water visibly and safely rather than into concealed walls.
