Slate roof rake and gable-edge details

The rake is both a visual line and a high-wind edge. Slate projection, backing, fastening and trim need consistent control from eave to ridge.

01

Set a straight durable edge

The substrate and trim must support the intended slate projection. Excessive overhang leaves corners vulnerable; too little can expose wood or direct water onto the wall.

02

Coordinate the starter and verge

The under-eave course, first field course and gable edge meet at the lower corner. Plan that junction so laps remain complete and the edge does not begin with a weak cut.

03

Protect against wind uplift

Perimeter zones often experience higher design pressures. Fastening and edge details should follow the project’s wind requirements and accepted slate practice.
