Slate thickness, texture and jobsite sorting

Natural slate is not a perfectly uniform manufactured panel. Skilled sorting turns the delivered material into courses that lie well and show intentional variation.

01

Nominal thickness needs tolerances

A specification should identify the intended thickness and acceptable range. Textured or hand-split products may show greater variation than calibrated material. Weight, fastener length, cutting and detailing should reflect the actual delivered range.

02

Sort before the roof controls the decision

Crews should organize material for thickness, color, texture, dimensions and defects before fastening it in difficult locations. Pulling from several pallets or crates can help distribute natural variation and avoid unintended bands.

03

Use the thicker pieces intelligently

Depending on the material and roof design, thicker or heavier pieces may be located where they support stable coursing and compatible laps. The installer should avoid abrupt steps that lift overlying slate or create pressure points.
