Know where the material came from
Record the original building or source when possible, along with dimensions, thickness, color and observed weathering. Mixed pallets may contain several products that look similar when dry but behave or weather differently.

Sort for soundness and geometry
Reusable pieces should be checked for cracks, delamination, damaged nail holes, excessive wear and dimensions that fit the intended layout. Ring or sound checks can be part of evaluation, but they do not replace experienced visual sorting and project judgment.

Plan waste and matching zones
Allow for breakage and pieces rejected during sorting. The most compatible material may be reserved for prominent elevations, while sound but less exact matches can serve concealed or less visible areas when appropriate.
