Understand the purpose of removal
Ask what the inspector hopes to learn and why the selected location is representative. A carefully planned opening may reveal conditions not visible from the ground, but it also requires proper reinstatement. Agree who will perform the work and how the opening will be protected. Do not remove installed slate simply to obtain a sample without a repair plan.

Document what was found
Request photographs identifying the roof location and both faces of the removed piece where relevant. Ask how the finding relates to nearby material and whether more investigation is justified. Save the observations with the condition report. A sample can support a diagnosis, but the assessor should explain how far the conclusion extends and which portions of the roof were not examined.
