Find what the patch was covering
Cement may conceal a broken slate, split flashing, open joint or previous fastener. Document its extent and investigate from adjacent accessible areas before removal.

Remove only with a repair plan
Old material may adhere strongly or contain reinforcement. Aggressive scraping can break slate. Plan replacement pieces and metal work before disturbing a patch that is temporarily shedding water.

Restore overlapping drainage
The durable repair replaces failed slate or flashing with correctly lapped, mechanically secured components. Sealant may have limited secondary uses, but it should not become the exposed primary roof.
