Survey metal separately from slate
Map each valley, wall, chimney, gutter and penetration. Record material, seam condition, coatings, movement and the condition of adjacent stone.

Remove enough slate for sound laps
A narrow surface patch cannot renew concealed metal. Carefully remove, label and store sufficient slate to reach proper termination points and install full-width replacement flashings.

Reinstall and supplement matching pieces
Sort salvaged slate and replace pieces damaged during removal with compatible material. Maintain original course lines and keep a record of the renewed detail.
