Historic tax-credit planning for slate roof work

Tax-credit and grant projects often require review before work begins. A technically good roof detail can still create a compliance problem if material is removed without documentation or approval.

01

Identify the reviewing authorities

Federal, state and local programs have different roles and submission requirements. Engage the preservation professional and program staff early.

02

Document significance and condition

Record original slate, patterns, dimensions, flashings and previous alterations. Demonstrate why proposed repair, selective replacement or full replacement is necessary.

03

Keep approvals aligned with construction

Substitutions, hidden conditions and mockup changes may require additional review. Maintain photographs, meeting records and approved samples through project completion.
