A roof that allows individual pieces and flashings to be renewed can avoid repeated wholesale replacement. Preserving sound existing slate often retains both material and embodied craft.

Quarry practices, fabrication, testing, packaging and transportation differ by source. Compare documented information rather than assuming every natural or manufactured product has the same footprint.

Plan salvage and end of life
Serviceable slate may be reused on the same building or stored for repairs. Broken clean stone may have other aggregate or landscape uses where appropriate; separate it from contaminated demolition waste.
