20×10 roofing slate: proportion, exposure and quantity

The 20×10 format creates a taller visual unit while maintaining a moderate width. It can emphasize vertical lines and reduce pieces per course compared with narrower slate.

01

Calculate the approved exposure

Use length and required headlap to establish nominal field exposure, then fit the course count to the actual slope without reducing lap.

02

Maintain sufficient joint offset

A 10-inch width usually supports a regular broken bond, but valleys, walls and penetrations can force narrow cuts. Shift the surrounding layout early.

03

Check handling and wind design

Longer pieces require stable support and correctly positioned fasteners. Perimeter and steep-slope conditions may require project-specific review.
