Using the standard field formula, exposure equals one-half of length minus headlap. Confirm the required headlap and slope before fixing the course spacing.

Expect a high piece count
Eight-inch width and short exposure mean many units per square. Include starter courses, cuts, sorting, breakage and pattern requirements rather than ordering from field count alone.

Small slate can follow curves and compact architectural details, but numerous joints demand disciplined offset and fastening. The deck and layout lines must remain accurate.
