Natural slate is quarried stone split into roofing units. Synthetic products may use polymers, rubber, mineral fillers or composite formulations. Composition influences weight, movement, color behavior, fire characteristics, recycling and repair methods.

Compare weathering and repairability
Natural slate has long-established field history and can often be repaired piece by piece. Synthetic products vary widely by manufacturer and generation. Ask for real installations of meaningful age, written repair instructions, replacement availability and documented performance in the project climate.

Read warranties carefully
Warranty length does not equal expected roof life. Review who provides the warranty, what failures are covered, whether labor is included, transfer terms and exclusions for fading, installation or environment. Compare the entire installed system, not just the face material.
