Compare work conditions
Dormers, narrow roof areas, curves, and numerous penetrations can increase layout, cutting, access, and flashing coordination. This is why a price from a simple roof may not transfer directly to a complex one. Ask the contractor to identify the features driving labor rather than attributing every difference to the slate material itself.

Evaluate proposed simplifications carefully
During design, changing a junction may reduce difficult work, but the change should be reviewed for appearance and drainage. During bidding, make sure each contractor has priced the same geometry and details. A less expensive proposal may have omitted part of the difficult work. Use drawings and a shared scope to clarify the difference before accepting a total.
