Draw the pattern by course
Develop elevations showing colors, shapes, repetitions and transitions. Account for actual slate dimensions and roof features so a centered motif does not collide with a valley, dormer or ridge.

Keep shaped pieces structurally sound
Cuts should leave adequate material around fastener holes and bearing points. Tight inside corners and narrow necks are vulnerable. Templates help maintain consistency without sacrificing strength.

Create a replacement record
Retain templates, color names, source information and spare pieces. Future repair is much easier when the owner knows the exact sequence and has matching material for a damaged motif.
