Match alloy and exposure
Coastal, industrial and mixed-metal environments require careful material compatibility. The designer should identify the stainless grade and form rather than accepting a generic ‘stainless’ label.

Consider repair work
A hard stainless nail can be more difficult to cut with a slate ripper than copper. That does not prohibit its use, but future removal and the chosen repair method should be considered.

Avoid damaging the slate
Ring shanks, oversized fasteners or excessive driving force can stress the hole. Use fasteners intended for slate and the actual deck, driven so the piece hangs rather than being clamped.
