Practical slate roofing tools
Plan your next slate roof.
Turn roof dimensions and color proportions into useful planning numbers, then prepare the questions your project team needs to answer.
01 / Area
Roof slope area estimator
Use the horizontal projected area of a roof plane, including its overhangs. This is its footprint viewed from above, not its measured sloping surface. Calculate different pitches separately, then add their results. The estimator does not infer a complex roof from building floor area.
Estimated sloping surface area
2,403.7 sq. ft.
Slope multiplier: 1.2019 · Roofing squares: 24.04
Formula: projected area × √(1 + (rise ÷ 12)²). No waste, laps or special details are included. A mathematical result at any pitch does not establish that slate is suitable for that pitch.
02 / Color blend
Slate blend allocation planner
Divide a planned piece count among three colors. Percentages refer to pieces, not surface area; mixed sizes may look different from these proportions. Use zero percent for an unused color.
- Gray
- 500 pieces
- Green
- 300 pieces
- Purple
- 200 pieces
Total: 1,000 pieces
Allocation rounds down first, then assigns remaining pieces to the largest fractional remainders. Ties follow color order. Final counts always match your total. Confirm the appearance using a physical sample panel and an agreed installation mixing plan.
